Have you watched Wolf Walkers yet? It is the most beautiful animated film I have ever watched. The animation style is very different than the Pixar-style. The only way I can describe it is that it’s more…Celtic. It was produced by Cartoon Saloon, a small animation studio based in Ireland. The story, too, is captivating and masterfully told. (I also have a soft spot for wolves. But that story is for another day.)
One of my favourite things about it is that, while it’s not the first film this company made, it’s the first one they got right. Wolf Walkers is the third and final instalment of their “Irish Folklore Trilogy.” I watched the previous two, and was fascinated by how much progress they made from movie to movie. In the first two movies, there were elements in the pacing, storytelling, clarity, and animation that were just…off. Even though it wasn’t perfect, they shipped the work, called it done, and got to work on the next one. They continued learning and progressing as they worked on the next project. And by the time they got to the 3rd instalment of the trilogy, they made a film that is, in my estimation, as close to perfection in its profound beauty as an animated film can get.
My takeaway is this: you don’t have to be perfect to get started. You don’t have to get it right every time. You don’t have to share only masterpieces. All you have to do is show up, do the work that you love doing, find joy in incremental improvement, listen to feedback, and aim for 1% better every day.
Let yourself be bad at things. It’s the only way to become good at things!
